What is Word After Word?
Set up in 2016, Word After Word is all about creative writing learning and development, which we provide through information and resources, workshops, courses and retreats.
“A word after a word after a word is power.” – Margaret Atwood from her poem Spelling
Writing is a process that happens word after word, one word at a time. Those words can evoke worlds, populate them with characters and create calls to action. They can still or stir the soul, they can make connections or reveal something profound about what it is to be human. Words can change the course of history.
Our approach is a blend of informative sessions about the craft and technicalities of creative writing across fiction, non-fiction and poetry, and looking at writing and creativity as ways to improve wellbeing. All of our sessions are practical, hands on, and full of ideas, inspiration, and prompts to get the creative juices flowing.
You may be a blocked writer or a beginner who has always wanted to write but doesn’t know where to start or someone at a crossroads in life and looking for a fresh approach to getting onto a new track.
Most of all, it’s about enjoying yourself, satisfying your curiosity and reminding yourself how to be playful, with language and with life.
Where Do We Do It?
We are based in the east of England but we also work across the UK and in Europe.
Why do We Do It?
Writing and teaching are our passions. Creative writing is one of the most fulfilling ways to express yourself. We are writers because we simply have to write, it is not really a question of choice, but people come to writing for many different reasons.
We know of one person who wrote her first novel at the age of 6. She created her tale in a handmade book. It had all of the necessary elements of a good story: a beginning, middle and end, a hero who triumphed in the face of adversity, a villain who got his comeuppance and an imaginative setting. It also had some lovely illustrations of the characters and the island where they lived. It didn’t matter that it was only about 20 words long and the book itself fitted comfortably in the palm of your hand.
We also know of a fellow who wrote his first ever short story at the age of 73, and it felt like an awakening, because for the first time in his life he’d written something that mattered to him and expressed something important.
So you see, you’re never too young or too old to start. If you’ve always had a secret hankering to write, or you are a seasoned writer in need of some much needed time-out and inspiration to reignite your practice, we know what it feels like, and we’re here to help!
Who Are We?
Word After Word was co-founded by Fiona Mason and Andrew L Reynolds, writers from the UK living between the salt-marshes and estuaries of north Essex, and the wild, rugged mountains of Andalusia.
