Writing a Crime Scene

7-9pm Wednesday 4th October 2017

“Place the body near the beginning of your book—preferably on the first page, perhaps the first sentence.” - Louise Penny

Welcome to the scene of the crime. The evidence is inconclusive. The mystery unsolved. It’ll take a maverick to piece together the clues and figure out the whole story. A maverick like you.

This standalone workshop is a short introduction to writing thriller, crime and conflict, and a fun preview of our 8-week Into Darkness course. After fuelling your imagination, we’ll set you loose on the page so you can begin to transform a villainous idea into a page-turning story.

Starting Your Memoir

7-9pm Wednesday 1st November 2017

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” - Maya Angelou

You don't have to be a celebrity to have an interesting story to tell that is worth sharing.

In fact, we all have a story inside, whether it's an episode from our own life or recording the details of the life of a loved one.

But if you want your story to be compelling and page turning and to have a powerful impact on your reader, you'll need to apply the disciplines of good storytelling to your personal accounts.

This workshop will look at examples from the genres of memoir and life-writing to think about how to approach your own memoir. Lots of hands-on writing exercises will get you started.

Bringing Fictional Characters to Life

7-9pm Wednesday 6th December 2017

“If you treat your characters like people, they'll reward you by being fully developed individuals.” - Don Roff

Memorable characters can make or break a book. How do our favourite writers bring their characters to life on the page?

In this standalone workshop we'll arm you with some fantastic tools to help you bring personality to your writing. Have you got a favourite character in a book and would like to understand how the writer has made you care so much? Are you working on a story and want some help getting your characters to sparkle? This workshop will help you to answer these questions.
