When we visited the Axarquía in 2013, we fell in love with the land and her people. As writers, we knew that it had something very special to offer us that would feed our creativity and imagination. We didn’t want to keep this to ourselves and so Writing Axarquía was born. We now run classes, workshops and retreats in Cómpeta, known as the pearl of the Axarquía, in this unique and special corner of rural southern Spain.
Our regular Creative Writing Workshops and Classes support beginning writers as well as those with more experience, through a structured, supportive programme that allows each writer to develop at his or her own pace.
Our week-long tutored Creative Writing Retreats, sometimes combined with other complementary activities, are a fantastic opportunity to have time-out to write and to relax in a tranquil setting with like-minded people.
Where is the Axarquía?
Lying at the eastern edge of the Málaga province of Andalusia, at the south of the Iberian peninsula, the Axarquía is one of the most breathtaking and beautiful regions of Spain and has been certified as one of the top 5 places in Europe for the healthiest air quality.
The setting is dramatic: from the rugged mountains and deep green valleys inland to the sweeping bays, wild cliffs and secluded coves of the coast. Pueblo blancos (white villages) hug the landscape, climbing their way up to the high Sierras of Alhama, Tejeda and Almijara, the saw-toothed mountain range that rises from the coast at Nerja and forms the natural barrier between Málaga and Granada provinces.
If the words Costa del Sol conjure an image of high-rise hotels and package tours, you’re in for a big surprise. If that’s your bag, then you will of course be able to find what you’re looking for, but if you like to dig a little deeper and reach beyond the tourist hot-spots, you’ll be rewarded by a land steeped in a history as varied and dramatic as any, and a natural beauty that gives you multiple WOW moments.
